Synopsis of Project

Students will experience art forms that originate in Africa through musical performances, interactive folk tales and workshops featuring West African and hip-hop dances.

Professional Development Component

Artist will provide staff training to support “Tracks of New Thinking” performance.

Creative Arts High School in partnership with

Synopsis of Project

Creative Arts, Johnson and Central high schools’ students will work together with an artist/ art teachers to experience the art and craft of raku pottery. Selected student work will be exhibited at ArtStart’s ArtGallery.

Professional Development Component

School staff will have the opportunity to create a pot and join students in the raku glazing and firing process in the spring.  In addition, a session at the Arts for All Conference will provide an overview of the project as well as the cultural and historical background of raku.

Synopsis of Project

Students will examine how one art form reflects the expressive character, emotional qualities and messages of a work of art in another form by creating an in-school musical composition.

Franklin teachers will be trained in interdisciplinary arts instruction.

Synopsis of Project

The project, entitled, “The Face of Art” will involve a visual artist working with students to create self portraits, portraits of friends, and other important people using a variety of media and artistic styles.

Professional Development Component

Classroom teachers will work with the artist to practice, develop, and refine their own artistic/instructional skills in portraiture.

Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre

Synopsis of Project

Students in grades 3-6 will take part in a multi-disciplinary, grade appropriate residency entitled, “How We Express Ourselves”. The residency will focus on different styles of puppetry and a performance for each group.

Professional Development Component

Staff will be able to attend a session of their choice in either shadow puppets, drum making/movement, or mask making.

International Academy, LEAP

Public Art Saint Paul

Synopsis of Project

LEAP students will create and display abstract patterns and motifs representative of their own cultures in a permanent, publicly visible location – the entryway of LEAP. Designs will also be carried out onto the street and neighborhood as part of the “Paint the Pavement” project in the Hamline community.

Professional Development Component

An arts educator will meet with LEAP teachers, of various disciplines, to map subject specific curriculum with the arts.

Synopsis of Project

Three artists, a Native American mask maker, musician and instrument maker, and a composer will work with students so they may explore, create and interpret various arts forms in a cultural context.

Professional Development Component

Each artist will work with grade level teams to deepen their understanding of the art forms and cultural connection to curriculum and instruction.

Synopsis of Project

Three Minnesota artists will teach spoken word and hip-hop, drama, and poetry in three one-week residencies.

Professional Development Component

English Department teachers will have a one-on-one experience with professional artists in the class setting, as artists’ model methods of working with students.

Synopsis of Project

Students will explore multiple art forms while learning about cultures different from their own.  Students will explore Gamelan Music of Java and the art of the Asmat Rainforest.
