In accordance with the agreement between the Saint Paul Board of Education and the Saint Paul Federation of Teachers, in-service credit may be granted for professional development coursework completed. In-service credits earned may result in movement on the wage scale for teachers and educational assistants. Workshops must be directly related to a teacher’s or educational/teacher assistant’s employment responsibilities. Teachers and educational assistants may apply for in-service credit by completing the Pre-Approval Application for Credit. Teaching assistants apply for clock hour pre-approval by completing the Teaching Assistant Workshop Pre-Approval Application. Submit a workshop course description or a copy of the brochure/flyer with the application. Workshops must receive pre-approval two (2) weeks prior to the course start date from the employee’s principal/supervisor and the Center for Professional Development.
The number of in-service credits earned is determined by actual instruction time. Ten (10) hours of instructional time is equal to one (1) in-service credit. The minimum number of workshop/course hours eligible to request in-service credit is two (2) hours for 0.2 in-service credits. Teaching assistants earn credit per workshop hour attended. The minimum number of workshop/course hours to request clock hour credit is two (2) hours.
Coursework for in-service credit must be paid for by the employee, taken on the employee’s own time, without pay or stipend from the District (#625). Coursework/workshops for in-service credit will not be approved if they occur during participant's scheduled, contractual workday.
When the coursework/workshop is completed, submit the signed copy of the Pre-Approval Application for Credit or Teaching Assistant Workshop Pre-Approval Application along with the clock hour certificate of attendance to: The Human Resources Department for credit towards advancement to the next salary lane. (Send all required paperwork to Human Resources upon completion of the coursework. DO NOT hold on to certificates until you have the appropriate number of credits for a lane change.)
