SPPS Involvement in Flint Hills
International Children's Festival 2006

Saint Paul Public Schools students, teachers/staff, and works of art were overwhelmingly visible at the 6th annual Flint Hill Children's Festival May 31 - June 4, 2006. The festival's main sponsor is Flint Hills Resources.  It was organized and facilitated by Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

All week long students attended international theatrical per- formances at Ordway Center. During the week.  Como High and Creative Arts High School were involved in ARTbuilds, a pilot art-making project sponsored by General Mills. Students worked with their teachers, Clair Rykken and Randy Schutt, to design and build a gigantic architectural sculpture using General Mills products - Progresso Soup, Yoplait yogurt and Cheerio boxes.  The cans of soup were donated to a food shelf at the end of the festival.  Artist Armando Guitiérrez G. facilitated the project.

Jan Louise Kusske's students from Webster Magnet had their sculptures, created over a 3 year time period, exhibited in Landmark Plaza.  Sections of Webster student artwork was enlarged and printed on huge banners which hung 2 downtown buildings.  3M donat- ed the enlarging and printing of the work.  Students from all over the district entered the Festival poster art contest and submitted work for the annual ARTwalk - which displayed the art in business windows throughout downtown Saint Paul.

In honor of Saint Paul Public School’s 150th anniversary and involvement in community partnerships, Saint Paul Public Schools and Saint Paul/Manzanillo, MX Sister City Organization shared an art making activity tent.  Over 2000 children, young adults and “big kids” visited the tent and created a Mariposa Hermosa (Beautiful Butterfly).  Jan Spencer de Gutiérrez organized the art-making tent again this year.  Thanks to Kris Emerson, Carmen Velasco, Judy, Dick, Barb, and others who volunteered. Thank you to 3M for sponsoring the tent for the past 4 years!

Thank you to Flint Hills Resources, 3M, General Mills, Ordway Center and to the other businesses, organizations and volunteers who helped make this an incredible experience for children, young adults, and "big kids" too!
